A German air ace in WWI. He was credited with 28 victories and was awarded the Pour le Merite on 8 October, 1917. After serving in the army for the first few months of the war he applied for the air service and did his pilot training in 1915. Initially in a squadron responsible for reconnaissance, observation and artillery direction, he still shot down two enemy planes in this time. He transferred to the Middle East to assist the Ottoman forces there, then joined a Prussian fighter squadron. In 1917 he became commanding officer of Jasta 36 and his victories began to mount. He was shot down however in January 1918, and by the end of the war two other brothers had joined him, buried in the grounds of the family estate.
