Sarah E. Terpening was born October 3, 1815, in Herkimer county, New York. She was married the 14th of July 1831 to Jacob Clapsaddle of the same place. To them wore born eight children, four sons and four daughters, Kilbern, Jerome, Mrs. Harriet Kelsey, Mrs. Sophia Gatliff, Jacob, George, Mrs. Mettie Richardson, Mrs. Elvie Steven, seven of whom are still living to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother, one Mrs. H. C. Kelsey having died some years ago.

In 1845, she with her husband and family moved to DuPage county, Illinois, where they resided till 1885 when they moved to O'Brien county, Iowa, where she resided until the time of her death, which occurred March 22, 1902, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.A. Richardson, with whom she has made her home since sometime before the death of her husband, which occurred in the same home in 1895.

Mrs. Clapsaddle was a great sufferer the last year of her life, but all that loving human hands could do to make her comfortable was done by her daughter and family. She was converted in early life and remained an earnest Christian until the time of her death.

The funeral occurred Sunday at the home and tho burial took place at Sutherland.
