Geologist Harry Glicken avoided death at Mount St. Helens only to be among thirty seven people killed during an eruption on June 3, 1991 of Japan's Mount Unzen in the Nagasaki prefecture.

He was doing research and observation when the pyroclastic flow or glowing avalanche eruption occurred, discharging volcanic ash, rock and hot gas. Two French volcanologists, Maurice and Katia Krafft, died with him. He was an expert on volcanic debris avalanches and ''was doing exactly what he wanted and was very happy being able to work on volcanoes,'' his father added. ''He was totally absorbed in it.'' His remains were cremated in Japan.
