Granma was the only one in her family that had a native name. (Except for her maternal Grandfather, Monroe "Momi" Terry.) Granma loved to garden. She always wore a Big sunhat. She and all her brothers and sisters were born on the farm in Blue Ridge, TX. The whole family was moved to Durant, OK and Granma grew up there. She worked as a millener until she married Granpa Chesnut (Lawrence Robert). He was the only one who didn't like school, his whole family being teachers and school principals. She raised 11 kids of 12. (Still looking for Bette Jean's burial place.) Everyone was expected to keep an eye on the younger ones, of course. I interviewed Granma the summer before she passed. This was the one and only time, that my Mom or I knew of, that she admitted being Native American. (She said "way back" we were Cherokee.) She changed the year of her birth all the time. She was at least, 2 yrs older than Granpa Chesnut. Can't blame her for trying!
