MT. PLEASANT--William Grant Peel of Mt. Pleasant, Utah, passed away peacefully Nov. 20, 1997 surrounded by family and friends.
He was born June 13, 1923 in Mt. Pleasant to John and Ester Peel. He was the seventh child of 12 children. At age four, Grant had polio which affected his ability to walk. This did not stop him. At age 25 he graduated from BYU with a degree in Music. He married Sybil Lusty on March 21, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised seven children, while two children died at birth. He was a music educator in the Uintah Basin, Park City, and Manila, Utah, and then moved to Rangely, Colorado, where he taught until his retirement in 1988. In the spring of 1967 while living in Manila, Utah, Grant had a serious virus infection in his spinal fluid. After returning home he was never able to walk on his crutches again and was confined to a wheelchair. This condition did not slow Grant down in the least and he continued doing all the things that he loved to do.
Grant loved the outdoors and spent many hours hunting and fishing. He was always involved with his community and the youth. He was involved with the 4-H, the Boy Scouts and in many other areas. He also was on the city council and served as county commissioner. Grant was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a music director, Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, High Priest teacher, Sunday School superintendent, high councilman, and ward missionary leader. He has a strong testimony of the gospel, and a wonderful voice. He sang at many weddings and funerals.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sybil; children, Diann and Ron Fox, Grand Jct., CO; Maria and Jerry Rea, Mt. Pleasant; Steve and Ann Peel, Bakersfield, CA; Janice and Boyd Hutchinson, Brigham City; and Valorie and Allen Arvig, St. George; 26 grandchildren; two sisters and four brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, one brother, three sons and one daughter.
Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 24th, at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Pleasant Stake Center. Friends and family may call at the Ursenbach Funeral Home, Sunday, 6-8 p.m. and Monday form 9-10:45 prior to the services. Interment, Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery.
