Sarah, the beloved life companion of James Dicken, died in this village Saturday morning at 6:30 o'clock. Mrs. Dicken had been failing for a number of years, and a week before her death was brought to Alexandria to be operated upon for cancer, and everything that surgical skill and loving friends could do was done but to no avail.
Mrs. Dicken was born in Winnebago, county, Wisconsin, in 1844, and came to Alexandria with her parents in 1858. Her father was one of the first settlers of this county, taking a homestead on lake Darling, a mile or two northwest of the village. She was married in Missouri to Mr. Dicken in 1864, he having just returned from the war. Her father was killed in the war. Mr. and Mrs. Dicken came to Douglas county shortly after their marriage and took a homestead in the north part of La Grand where they have lived ever since. One brother, Abner, of Alexandria, one sister, Mrs. McQuillian of Wadena, eight children and her husband survive her. The children are Mrs. Mary Greenwood and Edward of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Ida Busey of Havana, N.D., Mrs. Alice Hume, Ethel, Albert, Roy and Arthur, the four youngest being at home.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from her brother's home on Sixth avenue and was very largely attended. Rev. Allen of Lowry preached the funeral sermon. Mr. Darling, who is employed by the Northern Pacific in western Dakota, did not arrive in time for the funeral, but reached here the next day, returning to Sentinel Butte, N.D., yesterday.
