MT. PLEASANT--June Arlene Sheaffer passed away on July 27, 1998 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City due to complications following cancer surgery earlier this year.
Arlene's love of her children, animals, and her horses combined with her commitment to the community prompted her to become a North Sanpete High School Rodeo advisor, an adult riding club leader and member, an endurance riding enthusiast, chairperson, and organizer, Hub City Days Rodeo chairperson, PTA president, and Sanpete County 4-H Horse Clubs Coordinator.
Very active in the Sanpete 4-H Horse organization, most remember Arlene as the Mt. Pleasant "Saddle Tramps" 4-H club leader for over 25 years. If there was a child who needed to learn to ride, Arlene was the best teacher around.
Arlene was also a leader of several 4-H clubs, an LDS Primary teacher, a Cub Scout Den Mother, a volunteer EMT, a foreign exchange student sponsor and was named Mt. Pleasant Citizen of the Year in 1983 and the Utah Farm Bureau Leadership Award in 1984.
An accomplished artist, she used her creative talent to paint and make gifts for family and friends. She graduated from UVCC with an Associates Degree in Graphic and Commercial Art. She loved to ride and hunt in the mountains above Mt. Pleasant that were her childhood home.
Arlene was an unofficial "foster mother" to many, and all were welcome in her home. She had a unique way of teaching others to make a difference in the community simply by the example that she set.
Arlene is survived by her children, James Christensen, Sheri (Rick) West, Wade (Ruth) Christensen, Kaye (Kelley) Christensen-Beeny, and Jacob Rex Christensen; five grandchildren; her mother, June Jensen; sister, Carolyn (Pete) Jensen; brothers, Ray (Dorothy) Jensen, Yale Jensen, and Mont (Carol) Rasmussen.
Arlene's family wishes to thank Colleen Poulsen, lifetime best friend; Marles Oldroyd, great friend; and Dave Peel, best friend and companion; Dr. Thomas Dickinson and staff at Utah Valley Medical Center, and Dr. Gus Pendleton and staff at Sanpete Valley Hospital.
Family and friends can call on Wednesday, July 29th from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to funeral at Ursenbach Funeral Home, in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral service will be held Thursday, July 30th at 1 p.m., Mt. Pleasant 1st Ward Chapel. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery.
