The World lost and Heaven gained a beautiful and unique spirit with the peaceful passing of Mrs. Ella Fair Phillips on Sunday, May 25, 2014. Known for her generosity and warm heart, Ella was an exuberant and a high-spirited lady who was a cheerleader for all those she loved. She was always inviting, easy to talk to and encouraging. She frequently opened up not just her heart, but her home for friendly conversation and warm meals.

Ella was born on September 9, 1938 in Chatham, LA to the late Reverend Shepard Lawrence Caesar and Essie Mae McDowell Caesar. At an early age, Ella united with Mt. Earie C.M.E. Church. She received her formal education in Jonesboro, LA and graduated from Jackson High School, where she enjoyed being a majorette in the school marching band.

In January of 1959, Ella united in marriage with her high school sweetheart, Louis C. Phillips, affectionately known as "Louie". Shortly thereafter, they relocated to San Diego, CA. Their union was beautifully blessed with two sons, Derrick and Rodric.

Upon their arrival in San Diego, Ella and Louis joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend C. Johnson. She served faithfully in the Church Mission Department and Usher Board. She loved her church and church family, but above all she truly loved the Lord.

In her earlier years, Ella was employed by the San Diego Unified School District. She retired during the mid 1980s after numerous years of exemplary service. She also did volunteer work in the field of theatre and performing arts, along with being a league bowler with friends.

Later in life, when she wasn't in the delightful company of her loving companion Louis, her friend of fifty-five years, she could be found playing computer games, watching the "View" or shopping for that 'must have' hat or suit. She was also an avid reader of historical fiction and poetry and enjoyed gospel music. She was an excellent cook, baker and an infinitely devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved her family unconditionally and they dearly loved her. She will be greatly missed by all.

Ella was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Joe L Caesar and Shepard Caesar and one sister, Malline Wright.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving and devoted husband, Louis C. Phillips; two sons, Derrick Phillips and his wife, Marilyn and Rodric Phillips all of San Diego, CA grandchildren, Sherese and Joy; two brothers, Reverend Arnold B. Caesar and his wife Daisy of Maiden, LA and Hamlet Caesar and his wife, Rosie of San Diego, CA; two sisters, Mary Boatner of Jonesboro, LA and Pricilla White and her husband, Claudie of Houston, TX; sister-in-law, Geneva Caesar of Jonesboro, LA and a host of other relatives and friends who will mourn her passing, yet celebrate her life.
