TRENTON - Ulysses Davis, 75, of Trenton departed this life on Sunday, July 17, 2011, with his loving family by his side in the St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton, N.J.

Ulysses was educated in the Detroit Michigan Public School System. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served his country and earned an honorable discharge in 1958.

In later years he earned an associate degree from Mercer County Community College, attended the Fireman's Training School, the State Police Training Academy at Sea Girt, and earned certificates in police communications, narcotics investigations, crime scene investigations, photography, and a real estate license from Princeton School of Real Estate.

Ulysses was a public servant of the City of Trenton for 37 years where he began his career with the Trenton Fire Department as a fireman at Engine No. 5 on Pennington Ave. serving for five years, and then changing careers to work with the Trenton Police Department for 32 years where he began as a patrolman, and rose through the ranks as detective with the vice squad, sergeant, lieutenant, detachment commander of the Trenton Housing Authority and finally retiring in 1998 from the position of captain with the Trenton Police Department.

In addition to his family he was also committed to several organizations where he sat on the Board of Directors of B.O.L.E.S., The North 25 Corporation, The Urban League of Metropolitan Trenton, and The Carver Center. He was also a member of King David Lodge No. 15 of Trenton, N.J., and Kufu Temple No. 120, Princeton, N.J.

Ulysses received many accolades for his diligent service, but the one he cherished the most was the tribute where he was recognized and honored by the Community Cultural Club as "Outstanding Father of the Year" for which he received a resolution from City Council of the City of Trenton, New Jersey on June 17, 1993.

Formerly a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Ulysses recently joined the membership of the New Salem Baptist Church of Trenton. N.J.

Preceded in death by his parents, William Davis and Lillie Mae Wilson Davis, a son, David U. Davis; a grandson, Dwayne Gerald; five brothers Robert and John Gardner, Fletcher, Willie and Conrad Davis; two sisters, Mary Walker, and Columbia Bray. He leaves to celebrate his life six daughters, Yvette Goolsby, Pamela Owens, Kimberly Gerald, Sarah Davis Cox, Sherry Davis and Curby Ingram; one son, Jason Davis, one sister, Katie Mae Bailey, 13 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many extended family members, and a host of endearing friends.

A celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 25, 2011, New Salem Baptist Church, 316 Union St., Trenton, N.J. Calling hours are from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church. Interment Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Vet. Mem. Cem. Arneytown, NJ. Arrangements are by the Hughes Funeral Home.
