Ellen was united in marriage to Richard T. Freeman on March 18, 1949, at the Methodist Church in Ames, Iowa. They are the parents of: Sharon, Lynn, Brian, Janine, Patrice, and Kevin. The family lived in numerous Iowa towns including: Sumner, Green Island, Knoxville, Fairfax, and recently moved to Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids.
A dedicated deitician her entire life, she worked at the VA Hospital in Knoxville, the University of Iowa Hospitals, and at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids until retiring in 1987. Her happiest times were spent surrounded by her loving husband, children, grand and great-grandchildren. She loved listening to Big Band music, dancing, singing, baking, cooking, and sewing. At the age of nearly 92 years, Ellen entered into her eternal rest on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at the Woodlands Lynch Wing of Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Preceding her in death were her parents; her daughter, Lynn Freeman; her son, Kevin Freeman; and her brother, Howard Brechtel.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Richard of Cedar Rapids; three daughters: Sharon (Orlin) Schwab of Latimer, IA; Janine (Bob) Bickerman of Atlanta, GA; and Patrice (Greg) Alexander of Crystal Lake, IL; one son, Brian of Marion, IA; one daughter-in-law Peggy of Wichita, KS; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 20, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church, 310 5th St. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401, with Rev. Herbert Isenberg officiating. Casketbearers will be: Ben Freeman, Ryan VanOberbeke, Tom Miller, Lehn Shepherd, Brian Freeman, and Greg Alexander. Interment will be in Murdoch-Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Visitation will be at the Church on Friday, March 20, from 9 AM until 11 AM.
