She served three years with the U.S. Marines during World War II with the Third Marine Air Wing and was discharged at the rank of first lieutenant. At the age of 57 she enlisted in the 13th Evacuation Hospital Unit of the Wisconsin Army National Guard for three years. While with the Marines, she was stationed at Camp Le Jeune and Paris Island, S.C. and Cherry Point, N.C., where she served as a Control Tower officer. She was a life member of the American Legion Post 187 in Wisconsin Dells. While with the Post, she was elected commander and was the first woman in 50 years to serve in that position. he was also a charter member of Post 151 in Madison. In 1981-1982, she was presented the Arlene Rintoul Memorial Award in recognition of her outstanding service to the American Legion. The presentation was made by the Wisconsin Echelon No. 11, 20/4 at the Legion's state convention. Always interested in conservation, Eleanore and her family planted over 150,000 pine trees by hand in the Adams and Necedah area. For many years she was a member of the Sierra Club, Trees for Tomorrow, the Friends of Sauk County, the Friends of Devil's Lake, and the Sauk and Wisconsin Historical Societies. She was always eager to travel and during her lifetime, she visited all 50 states except Hawaii. Another hobby was bicycling and she often toured with other bicyclers and her family. At the age of 80, she gave up biking after a total hip operation. During the years, she was awarded a Presidential Physical Fitness Award from President Reagan for riding her bicycle for 1,000 miles. Another award she received from the President was for hiking 125 miles. For many years, Eleanore was a member of the Women Marines National Association and was also active in the Wisconsin Women Veterans. In 1987 she became a Half Century Club member of the UW Alumni Association.

At her request, graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005 at the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Baraboo where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 187. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Friends of Devil's Lake. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family.

We like to believe that Eleanore is enjoying eternity as she wheels along that giant bikeway in the sky.....with the wind always at her back.
