Shirley was a 1946 graduate of Deering High School. Following her graduation, she married and became a bookkeeper for her husband's clothing company and started her family. After moving to Bowdoin, she became the Town Clerk in Bowdoin, a job she held for many years.
At the same time, she started and operated her own business, Laughing Lion Country Day School, a daycare at her home. She was a strong advocate for the disadvantaged including feeding the hungry and coordinating the Santa Claus Fund for the less fortunate for the Town of Bowdoin.
Shirley enjoyed traveling, the ocean, reading, theatre, gardening and flowers.
She is survived by five children, Marie Towle Wimert and husband, Randy of Falmouth, Daniel W. Towle, Jr. and wife, Diane of Fryeburg, David L. Towle and wife, Kathy of Bowdoin, Timothy M. Towle and wife, Ellie of Bowdoin, and Martha Towle Redd and husband, Thomas of Lindale, Texas; their father, Daniel W. Towle, Sr. of Farmingdale; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Rick Wimert; and a brother, Nelson Sherwood Coe.
A celebration of life will be held at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland, on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at 11 a.m. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m., until the hour of the service.
