Russell Lamphere was one of 14 children born to Russell and Lydia (Minor) Lamphere in Norwich Falls. He grew up around the mills and learned machinist and metalworking skills. An ambitious man, he took his wife, Hannah(Andrews), and their children to Tuscaloosa, Alabama in the early 1850's where he set up a business. Things went badly during the Civil War and by 1870 he and his wife and daughters ended up back in Johnston, R.I. where he attempted again to start a mill. Eventually, he gave up on that and worked as a supervisor in the Oriental Mill, Providence. After the death of his first wife, he married Sarah Frances Rawson. He died at age 80 in Cranston, R.I. and is buried in an unmarked grave at Yantic Cemetery with his first wife.
