Lady Elizabeth Emma Proby was the daughter of Admiral Granville Leveson Proby, 3rd Earl of Carysfort and Isabella Howard.
She married Lord Claud Hamilton, son of James Hamilton, Viscount Hamilton and Harriet Douglas, on 7 August 1844.

Her son-in-law, John Tyndall was a noted scientist. He worked with Louis Pasteur on the study of bacteria. The book “Louis Pasteur; His Life and Labours” by his son-in-law was translated from French to English by Lady Claud Hamilton, with the book's introduction by John Tyndall.
