Col. Doris Sue Frazier
Evans, GA- On Friday, September 5, 2014 Col. Doris Sue Frazier surrendered to Alzheimer's disease, which she had been battling for nearly a decade at the Arbor, Brandon Wilde, Evans, GA. This marked the end of a long and rewarding life and career dedicated to service in honor of her country, her profession and her loved ones.
Sue was born in Malden, Mo on 28 August 1927 and, as stated by her friend and caregiver Bobbie Davis who preceded her in death by just over 1 month, matured beyond her years both physically and mentally. Originally a diploma-nursing graduate, she continued her education with a BS at the University of Minnesota and then graduating with honors at Baylor University with a master's degree in Hospital Administration in 1967.
After joining the Cadet Nurse Corps, she began her 27 years of military service in Augusta at Oliver General hospital in 1949 as a staff nurse. Her career took her throughout the world as an operating room nurse and later as an assistant to the Chief, Army Nurse Corps, then General Anna Mae Hays, the first woman in the Army to become general. Her final military assignment was as Chief Nurse at Eisenhower Army Medical Center retiring in 1976.
Following her military career, Sue became a professor in Nursing Administration at the Medical College of Georgia, School of Nursing that lead to the role of Acting Dean of the School from 1979 through June of 1980.
Sue was an active supporter of nursing and women in the military both locally and nationally. She also served as president of the Retired Officers Association for the Army Nurse Corps (RANCA) and served in advisory capacity on multiple boards.
Her awards and honors include the Legion of Merit (1976), given in recognition of superior meritorious achievements. She was also awarded the Nurse of the Year, an honor bestowed on local nurses who have had significant impact on the community.
Her sister, Joann Crank, and several nieces and nephews are living in Missouri, Florida and Virginia. Her friendship and love of life will be missed by all of her friends and colleagues who have shared so much joy with her throughout her long and fruitful life.
