Frank grew up in rural Kansas during the depression. He was the oldest of 7 children born to John Franklin Houston and Lucy Pack Houston. He served in the army in WWII. On Nov. 21, 1953 he married Bette St. George Sampson. She had two small daughters that Frank adopted as his own. One of those daughters died as an infant (SIDS). Frank & Bette had 2 more children, and they lived with their 3 children in Spokane, Washington, for a time, and later shifted to Portland, Oregon.
