CAPT. DEL LAWSON DIED ON THURSDAY
Former Sheriff Passed Away Suddenly At Home Here
His Funeral Will Be Held Sunday Morning

Derrick K. Lawson, better known as Capt. Del Lawson, died suddenly at his home on the Johnsons Creek Road, Thursday morning.

Captain Del was one of the community's best known and most highly regarded citizens. Practically all his life he had been engaged in following the water or in the seafood business, except for the past two or three years when he spent most of his time working in the garden at his home in Asbury.

He had for years been a power in the Republican politics of the county, and in 1910 was elected Sheriff of Somerset county, serving in that office for four years with credit and efficiency.

A member of Asbury Methodist Church, he was for many years active in church affairs and enjoyed the services there and the fellowship.

He was a man of firm convictions, outspoken, honest, and with his homely philosophy he made friends in every walk of life who enjoyed his company and sought him out at every opportunity.

A son of the late John J. and Hettie E. Lawson, he was born and raised in the community where he spent the 78 years of his life, and his death has caused a loss that brings sincere grief to a large circle of friends and acquaintances in his home community and in many other parts of the State.

Funeral services will be held at his home on the Johnsons Creek road Sunday morning at 11:00 o'clock conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.T. Rowlenson. Interment will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.

Bearers are to be Fred N. Holland, Sewell Bradshaw, Scot Lawson, Edward Whealton, William Sterling and Bert Mason.

Mr. Lawson is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nellie J. Lawson, two sons, Noah Lawson of Delmar, and Carson Lawson, and three daughters, Mrs. Georgianna Maddox, Mrs. Jannie Christy, and Mrs. Flora Laird.

One sister, Mrs. Mary Hurley of Baltimore, nine grandchildren, and eleven great- grandchildren also survive.
