CHILHOWIE, Va. Vera L. Powers, age 95, of Chilhowie, Va., passed away Thursday, March 12, 2015, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion after a brief illness. She was born on June 2, 1919, to the late Frank H. and Lura Alderman Little. She grew up in Ashe County, N.C., and the Dry Fork area of Tazewell County, Virginia. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Powers was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Donald Powers; two brothers, Raymond and Elmer "E.B." Little; and two sisters, Carrie Boothe and Bureda "Boots" Livesay. She is survived by a son, Sam Powers of Asheville, N.C.; sister Juanita "Nein" Legard of Chilhowie; Betty Livengood, of Blue Earth, Minn., and Shirley Vernon, of Kernersville, N.C.; brothers, the Rev. E.C. "Gene" Little and wife, Shirley, of Chilhowie and Jim Little and wife, JoAnn, of Chilhowie; and many caring nieces and nephews. She also had several wonderful friends and helpers, including Roger and Marie Hall, Judy Duncan, Marie Stines, and Roy Love. Vera worked at the Town House Hosiery Mills, but spent 34 years working for the U.S. Post Office in Chilhowie, many of those as Clerk. She was a long time member of Riverside Baptist Church in Chilhowie, and volunteered on several pulpit committees. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at the Bradley's Funeral Chapel of Chilhowie. A family graveside service will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Chilhowie with the Rev. E.C. Little officiating. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or Chilhowie Rescue Squad. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.bradleysfh.com. Bradley's Funeral Chapel of Chilhowie is serving the family of Mrs. Powers.
