Cheryl Anne Petty, 62, left us for another, more peaceful place, Monday, March 9, 2015, at her home in Nampa. Her sister, Marsha, was holding her and let go so she could fly away. Cheryl was born in Lewiston on March 10, 1952, to Galen and Jean Buchanan. She was the third of their three children. She was raised on a farm in the Tammany area south of Lewiston and was active in 4-H.
She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1970. She started her higher education journey at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston in the ’80s. Her focus was accounting, and she graduated in 1992. There were two earlier marriages, first to Albert Betz and then Fritz Mensinger, that both ended in divorce. She worked in the lab at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston and started doing bookkeeping for private clients. Her prowess in that field then took her to the Duckworth boat company in Clarkston, Wash., Nelson’s RV in Boise and Western Marine in Nampa. She met Terry Petty, her present husband, during that period. They were married in 1995 at Donnelly. Terry and Cheryl owned and operated the Western Marine boat shop for several years. This business introduced her to the excitement of bass and steelhead fishing. Fishing on the Clearwater River became one of her favorite activities. She has greatly enjoyed being with a group of women friends in the Boise area, taking a boat out on the river, helping organize many bass tournaments and cooking great amounts of chili for the participants. She and Terry enjoyed a trip to Hawaii with their good friends, the Millers, and also many weekends at the Millers’ lake cabin.
Last year, life began to unravel for Cheryl when she realized she had breast cancer that was going to be very difficult to heal. She fought it again and again as each method of treatment failed to stop this terrible disease, finally succumbing to it.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, Galen Buchanan; her mother’s sister, Dorthy, and uncles Cletus Sarbacher and Thomas Wharton; her grandparents, Myrtle and Lafe Mounce, and Clayton and Hannah Buchanan; and all her Buchanan aunts and uncles. She is survived by her husband, Terry Petty; her four-footed love, Lacey; her mother, Jean Buchanan; her brother, Larry, and his wife, Michele; her nephew, Steven Buchanan, and his wife, Gina, and grandnephew Clayton; her nephew, Duane Kaiser; her sister, Marsha Swartz, and her husband , Edward; her nephew, Adrian Swartz, and his wife, Nazia, and grandnephews Emaan and Armon; her niece, Alia, and her husband, Brent Turner, and grandnieces Amaya and Zarina Turner.
A celebration of life for Cheryl will be held in Lewiston at The Orchid Room, 301 Main St., at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 22. Another celebration will be held in the Nampa area at a later date. Her ashes will be spread on the family homestead land on Craig Mountain south of Lewiston at a family gathering.
Memorials may be made to the 4-H Clubs of Nez Perce County, in care of the Nez Perce County UI Extension Office, 1239 Idaho St., Lewiston, ID 83501; Lewis Clark Animal Shelter, 6 Shelter Rd., Lewiston, ID 83501; or to the charity of your choice.
