Phil was a United Methodist Church Minister who earned his Bachelor of Divinity from Vanderbilt University, School of Divinity in Nashville, TN June of 1941. He was the editor of the book "Pungent Prayers" and wrote the newspaper column of the same name. He served churches in Oklahoma, Mississippi, Arkansas and Illinois from 1941 until 1977 when he retired in West Frankfort, IL. Although born in KY, he grew up in Washington, D.C.. Before completing college, he worked as a newsboy, a fountain clerk in People's Drug Store (Those were the days of soda fountains.) in Washington, DC and a life insurance salesman. He was active as a Boy Scout and later became a Scoutmaster. He wrote a manual for a badge called God and Country.
Phil married Pauline Smith at Scarrit College Chapel in Nashville, TNin 1941. They had 3 children. Mary Lois, Rebecca and Susan Paulin e.
