CHARGES UPGRADED TO CAPITAL MURDER IN BURGLARY-SHOOTING AFTER HOMEOWNER DIES

Freestone County authorities upgraded charges Monday against three Teague teenagers suspected in a burglary in which the homeowner died after fatally shooting one of the suspects.
Freestone County Sheriff Don Anderson said county officials filed capital murder charges Monday against O’Jarion McClenon, 18; Lawson Abram, 18; and Amber Hope Halford, 19, the niece of the homeowner.
Their charges were upgraded from aggravated robbery after homeowner Douglas Hurst, 45, died Friday at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco, four days after he was shot during the break-in at his home, just northwest of Teague off U.S. Highway 84.
Investigators said they think Halford planned two separate break-ins at Hurst’s home and reportedly served as a getaway driver, officials said.
Anderson and Department of Public Safety Trooper D.L. Wilson said the Freestone County and Texas Ranger investigation revealed the first break-in occurred March 8, while Hurst was on a trip to Galveston.
Two laptop computers, two rifles and two pistols were taken, officials said.
After the burglary, Hurst returned to his residence and was alone when his home was broken into again at 1:30 a.m. March 9, Wilson said.
Hurst exchanged gunfire with the intruders, striking Joshua Mulkey, 19, who was found dead in Hurst’s yard.
Mulkey was Halford’s boyfriend, the investigation showed. Hurst was critically wounded and died Friday.
Freestone County officials increased the trio’s bonds Monday from $250,000 to $1 million each, the sheriff said.
Dustin Daniel Sanoja, 19, has been charged in the first burglary at Hurst’s home. He remains jailed in lieu of $30,000 bond.
