Janet Winter Washburn Hammond, died peacefully at her home. She was the daughter of Ruth Comstock Washburn and Gould Engle Washburn. Having already lost her father at 4 months of age, her mother and grandmother moved the family to Brooklyn, NY where she completed elementary education at PS 241, high school at Erasmus Hall and became an RN after studying at Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, graduating in 1947. Janet married her first husband Henry Merritt and moved to his hometown of Hartland, VT where she was a farmer's wife for many years. Once her daughters were in school, she returned to nursing at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1986 as nursing supervisor on the evening shift. After her divorce from Henry, she married Basil Hammond and eventually they moved to Sarasota, FL where they made their home until their deaths.
Janet is survived by her daughters, Martha Coutermarsh and her husband, Mark of North Hartland, VT, and by Pamela Merritt of Rutland; a sister Nancy Russell and her husband, A. William of Manchester, CT. She was predeceased by her daughter Jessica in 1980 and by her husband Basil in 2004.
Janet will be remembered as a wonderful Mom, and a good friend to many, an avid Jeopardy fan, she loved to read, enjoyed singing and her craft of stained glass. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Some of Janet's most cherished moments were times she was able to spend with her nephew Don Smith and his wife Kathleen of Orlando.
