Karl J. Warren, age 82, formerly of Ithaca, died Sunday, June 15, 2008 at MM Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mary Warren; 5 children, Karl (Janice) Warren Jr. of Rome, NY, Stuart C. (Sandra) Warren of Florida, Cindy A. (Walter) Schlaepfer of Maine, Todd L. (Pamela) Warren of Canandaigua, Jennifer (Gregory) Bullion of Florida; 2 step-children, Robert (Amy) Morrison of Carmel, NY, Christopher (Dana) Morrison of Maryland; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia Ann (Caudill) Warren in 1974, brother Daniel H. Warren in 2006 and step-daughter, Sarah T. Morrison in 2000.
His family and friends remember Karl as a kind and gentle man whose actions and words conveyed his genuine affection for them.
He was respected and admired throughout the salt industry where he spent his career as a salesman and later National Account Sales Manager for Watkins Salt Co. and Cargill Inc. Karl's customers were always his number one priority and he would go to extraordinary lengths to insure their needs were met while balancing his organizations objectives. Karl was a wonderful mentor for new associates as well as seasoned veterans. He could be counted on for support and encouragement, and also a good dose of straight talk when necessary.
Karl's life outside of work was dedicated to his family. When his first wife died suddenly leaving him alone with 5 children to raise, he summoned an inner strength and gave them the guidance, love and courage to move forward with their lives. He brought the same strength to his new wife and children and treated his "new" children as if they were his own. His quiet resolve caused them to pause, listen and learn from his words and his example. He lived what he taught.
Everyone who knew Karl described him the same way; "he is the ultimate gentleman, gracious and generous, considerate and thoughtful and a joy to share life's journey with". His life was a model for all to follow.
There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held Thursday at 11:00am at St. John's Episcopal Church, 210 North Cayuga St., Ithaca. Interment in Grove Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville, Kentucky.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 435 E. Henrietta Rd., Rochester, NY 14620.
