S. heavy artillery where he served to the end of the war; returned to Castleton after mustering out at New London, Conn. in 1865; worked for a time in harness making with his father then went to work for the Rutland Globe newspaper for several years; in 1873 left for Panama to work on the lathmus, remained there for nine years; returned to Vermont in 1882 and entered employ of the Rutland Herald; was appointed post master at Castleton in 1885; traveled for the Rutland Herald until going to Bennington in 1893; furnished correspondence and special news articles for a large number of papers including the Troy Press, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Burlington Free Press, Rutland Herald, St Albans Messenger, New York Tribune, North Adams Transcript, the United Press association and others; his wife, daughter, and two sons survived him; charter member of Roberts Post G.A.R. of Rutland; member of Center Lodge F. and A. M. of Rutland
