Rufus C. Tovera was the son of livery stable owner Bartley and Matilda Low Tovera, originally from Tennessee. Rufus, a harness maker and saddler enlisted as a Corporal for the Union in Caseyville on June 25, 1861 for a 3-year tour of duty. He mustered in at Caseyville same day but died of typhoid fever just 2 months later in the "general hospital at Bird's Point, Missouri on Aug 25, 1861 where his company was garrisoned until Feb 1862;" he was only 20 years old.
