Thomas was the son of George E. Gunter and Sidney Watson.

He was first married to Sarah M Cunningham ca. 1848 in Haywood County. Three children would be born to this union: Octavia Americas Gunter, Caledonia Mae Gunter and James L Gunter.

Following Sarah's death in 1858, Thomas would remarry to Sophia "Sophronia" Huggins on 09 Oct 1859 in Macon County, NC. Performed by: J. M. Lyle, Justice of the Peace. Witness, R.C. Slagle, Clerk - Bondsman: Jesse S. Moore. No children would be born to this union.

Following the death of Sophia, ca. 1880, Thomas would remarry to Mary "Kittie" Clark ca. 1880. Six children would be born to this union: George Thomas, William Luther, Leonest Lawrence "Lee", Curtis Alexander T, Fred and John Earley Purley Gunter.

Thomas is still alive in the 20 Jun 1900 Monroe County Census Records.

He would die sometime prior to the 1910 Census.
