Son of George Frederick Stainbrook and Agnes Belle Huling. He was one of their sons that chose to be known as a Steinbrook rather than a Stainbrook. Married Caroline Jane Smith 16 December 1885. Father of Charles Leslie and Raymond. His wife and Charles Leslie are buried at Forest Home Cemetery next to the Smiths.

The 1910 census James is enumerated with Eunice his wife of five years and his 18 year old son Raymond. By 1920 James is presumably divorced and living alone.

During his working years he was a clerk for the Wabash Railroad. His death took place at 4724 Wrightwood in Chicago where he had lived for 43 years. Death was due to carcinoma of prostate, with myocardial degeneration a contributing cause. His burial took place at Acacia Park on July 16, 1931.
