William Graves dies; on State School Board

William C. Graves, 70, of 1640 Junior Drive, a member of the State Board of Education, and a former state senator, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 1966,at his home.

He was a City of Dallas corporation court judge from 1925 to 1957. In 1929, he was elected police and fire commissioner where he served until 1931 when the city switched to the council-manager form of government.

Mr. Graves was born on a farm near Franklinton, La., and worked on his father’s farm as his first job. Later he was a locomotive fireman and came to Dallas in 1919 as an office employee of the Texas & Pacific Railway Co.

He studied law at night and became a member of the bar in 1923. A few months later he was appointed assistant district attorney of Dallas where he served about a year.

In 1939, Mr. Graves was elected state senator and served two terms. In 1945 he was president pro-tem of the Senate.

He had served on the state board of education since his election in 1952. His last term was to expire on Jan. 1, 1971.

During World War I, Mr. Graves served as a radio operator aboard the old battleship U.S.S. New Jersey.

He was a member of Cliff Temple Baptist Church, a charter member of the Bonehead Club and a member of East Kessler Club. A 32d degree Mason, he was a member of Hella Temple Shrine and the Oak Cliff Masonic Lodge.

Survivors: Wife, a daughter, Mrs. J. T. Price of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Miss Alma Graves, a missionary in Japan, and six brothers, John Graves of Dallas, Tom Graves and Joe Graves of Franklinton, La., Nat Graves of El Paso, Hubert Graves of Shreveport, La., and Don Graves on Bogalusa, La.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday[, Jan. 28,] in Bassett Chapel of Cliff Temple Baptist Church, with burial in Laurel Land Memorial Park. The Dallas Morning News, Jan. 27, 1966; p. D5
