Berry Crain, Jr., 73, beloved husband of Diane Hoke Crain, died Monday, March 9, 2015 at Georgia Regents University Medical Center.
A native of Brandon, MS, Berry was the son of the late Berry Crain, Sr. and Inez Claud Crain.
He received his Bachelors degree from Mississippi State University and his Masters and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. Berry was a chemical engineer, retiring from DuPont at the Savannah River Plant before becoming an independent contractor and starting Technical Solutions. He was recognized as an expert in the field of Nuclear Material Control and Accountability and worked as a contractor with the Department of Energy in a cooperative program with the Federal Agency on Atomic Energy (Russia).
Berry was an avid golfer and member of Palmetto Golf Club, where he served on the Board of Governors and as Chairman of the Greens Committee. He won multiple club championships at area golf courses. He and friend Skipper Perry initiated the Palmetto Amateur Tournament in 1976, and he served as tournament Co-Chairman since its inception. He was honored in 2014 with the Hitchcock-Whitney Award for contributions to golf in the Aiken area. Berry worked at the Master's Tournament for 40 years on the Scoring Committee and was Chairman of the committee when he retired in 2013.
Berry was a long-time member of the Aiken Sertoma Club, serving in many offices locally, statewide and nationally. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Diane, include four sons, Gregory Hoke Crain (Tara), Richmond, VA, James Berry Crain (Leigh), The Woodlands, TX, Scott Robert Crain (Teresa), Aiken and Bradley Claud Crain, Aiken; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Crain, Jackson Emery Crain, John Ellington Crain and Campbell Inez Crain; and cousin Tom Crain (Jeanette), Tallassee, AL.
Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery.
