Alvin J. Mitchell, Jr., beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, died peacefully on March 6, 2015 at the William E. Christoffersen Salt Lake Veterans Home, where he resided since November 2014.
Alvin was born in Salt Lake City to Alvin Mitchell and Francis E. Butterwood on November 15, 1934.
He graduated from West High School. He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Al married Ida Forsgren, "The Love of His Life," on May 4, 1957. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on September 3, 1983.
Al was never one to be idle. He was an engineer for most of his career and was involved with the mechanical designs of many prominent Salt Lake City buildings. He also worked for the US Forest Service, the Union Pacific Railroad, and Trumps, Inc. He was an early member of the Bountiful Volunteer Fire Dept.
He loved being in the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fly fisherman. He had a deep appreciation of wildlife and the environment. He loved to fly small airplanes and enjoyed taking his children up for air rides.
He was always looking for opportunities to build or fix things. Dad loved spending time with his sweetheart making their yard the beautiful place that it was.
He was an active member of the LDS Church, holding numerous callings, including Stake High Councilman and a member of the branch presidency at the Heritage Place.
His later years were filled with multiple health issues, which he faced with cheerful optimism. His personal motto was to "adjust and adapt" to whatever life brought his way. He was an inspiration to us all.
When he was no longer able to work in his award winning yard or continue to fly fish with his sons, he found it difficult, but never complained. He focused his attention on remaining independent and always being grateful for all he was blessed with.
We find comfort in knowing that Dad has been reunited with our mother, his eternal sweetheart, who succumbed to cancer in 2007. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, step-father (Bill Post), sister, and countless friends. He is survived by his children, Julie Cooley (Kim), Scott Mitchell (Malinda), and Mark Mitchell (Loni); five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2015 in the Bountiful Thirty-Sixth Ward Chapel, 102 East 1400 South, Bountiful. Friends and family may visit on Thursday, March 12, 2015 between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, and prior to the services at the church on Friday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment will be in the Bountiful Memorial Park.
