Mary Wright Butler, age 87, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, N.C., after a brief illness.

Mrs. Butler was born on Dec. 23, 1926, in Topton, N.C. She was a 1944 graduate of Wilmington High School in Wilmington, Del. She worked for many years as a secretary at Old Fort Finishing Plant in Western North Carolina and later as an administrative assistant for Rutherford County Schools, where she retired. After retirement, while living in Spindale, N.C., she enjoyed hosting bridge night, spent time in her garden, and could always be counted on for fresh okra and tomatoes. She later moved to Spartanburg, S.C., to live with her daughter and family and then to Maryville, to live with her brother.

Her family has most recently enjoyed spoiling her at White Oak Estates Assisted Living in Spartanburg, where she was a much-loved resident. Mrs. Butler is remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who always put others' needs ahead of her own. She was also faithfully close to her extended family and had a knack for developing deep, life-long friendships. Likewise, she was extremely proud of her career and reputation as a hard-working and loyal employee.

Mrs. Butler is survived by her grandson, Joshua Lonon (Julie) of Spartanburg; granddaughter, Leah Lonon Costner (Bert) of Kings Mountain, N.C.; granddaughter-in-law, Anna Lonon of Charleston, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Alex and Charlie Lonon, Trey and Rosemary Costner, and Jack and Harper Rose Lonon; stepchildren, Richard Butler (Kathy) of Boone, N.C., Gay Murphy (Gary) of Boone and Jo Balcombe (Tom) of Raleigh, N.C.; stepgrandchildren, Patrick, Megan, Brianna, John, Jason, Chelsey, and Chandler; nieces and nephews, Larry Wright (Belinda); Sam Wright (Yi Zhu), Drew Wright (Bridget McKinley), Alice Wright (Joga Rao); and great-nieces and nephews, Savannah, Sarah, Alexx, Lauren, and Lacey Wright, Jia Wei Wu and Devin and Nola McKinley-Wright.

Mrs. Butler was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Drew DeWeese and Carrie Rose Wright; first husband, John Bean; second husband, C. Marion Butler; daughter, Susan Lea Bean Lonon; brother, Donald Wright; and grandson, Michael Lonon.

A graveside service will be led by Rev. Perry Holleman at Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews, N.C., at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Butler has requested that memorials be made to the Valleytown Cemetery Fund, c/o Andrews City Hall, P.O. Box 1210, Andrews, NC 28901 or to the Michael Lonon Foundation c/o Anna Lonon, 2233 Wood Ave, Charleston, SC 29414.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at White Oak Assisted Living for their care and attentiveness over the past few years and the staff at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby for the peace and comfort that they surrounded her with during her last days.
