"Funeral services for Fred Zuehlke, Davenport pioneer who died at his home here May 2 of pneumonia, were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev R K Flogal officiating. A mixed quartet, Mrs Lloyd B Peffley, Mrs L A Cathcart, Dr J P Poynter and C W Richards, sang two selections, and Mrs Peffley and Mrs Cathcart sang one duet number. Miss Mabel Inkster was accompanist. Members of the Masons, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias lodges attended the service in a body. The first two organizations escorted the body from the J C Phillips mortuary to the church, and the Masonic lodge had charge of the cemetery service at Mountain View Cemetery, where interment took place. Pall bearers were J E Howard, C E Ivy, James F Forney, George Janett, John P Bond and J B Darling. Mr Zuehlke was born in Berlin, Waterloo County, Ontario,Canada, Aug 31, 1862 and went to Michigan while a boy, growing to young manhood in that state. He came to Spokane in 1882, homesteaded near Waterville shortly afterward and then returned to Spokane . In 1887 he returned to Michigan and was married there to Margaret Donald, and they came west again toSpokane , and moved to Davenport in 1889. Mr Zuehlke was in the bottling business here for a time, and then opened a blacksmith shop, which he operated until his final illness about a week before his death. He was active in community life, and served on the city council for several terms. In 1896 while the county seat was at Sprague, he was the first resident of the county to pay his taxes and received tax receipt No. 1 for 38 consecutive years. He was active in lodge work, and was a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Rebekah lodges and took part in the work of these organizations, seldom missing a meeting. He was a past master and present treasurer and chaplain of the Masonic lodge, a past noble grand and present chaplain of the Odd Fellows and had held various offices in the Knights of Pythias lodge.

The deceased pioneer is survived by one daughter, Mrs Minnie Rohlman, of Puyallup, two sons, Fred Jr, of Spokane, and Murray of Davenport, one sister, Mrs Mary Allen of Great Falls, MT, two brothers, Henry Zuehlke of Rosewell, MI, and Frank Zuehlke of Vancouver, BC. His wife died here April 7. Among those from out of town who were here for the funeral were Mr and Mrs Charles Rohlman of Puyallup, Mr and Mrs Fred Zuehlke Jr, Spokane; Mr and Mrs G K Birge, Mr and Mrs Al Birge and sons, and David Birge, Odessa; Mr and Mrs Henry Birge and son, Colville; Ed Birge, Cedonia; Mrs Mary Allen, Great Falls, MT; Mr and Mrs Rolf Dwinnell, Mrs Ida Doolittle, Mr and Mrs D C Keith, Mr and Mrs Fred Fischer, Mr and Mrs Sam Paul, Mr and Mrs Percy Stanley, Ray E Kurtz, Spokane; Mr and Mrs R D McRae, Mr and Mrs J M Glasgow, John McLean, Hunters; Mr and Mrs John Huffman, Leo Glasgow, Gerome; F J Gilpatric, Carl Friberg, John Gordon, Charles Phillips, Jim McKinnon and J A Braden, Harrington; W H Padley and A Pepper, Reardan."
