John Jacob Flory, born 26 Dec. 1842 around Smithburg, MD. baptized 23 Aug.1846 in Waynesboro, Franklin, PA. He was a Segt. in the Civil War. Daniel & John wanted to join, but their Father didn't want them to. Daniel went to Hagerstown with some friends and they joined then they dared Daniel to and he did. After he got home an told his father, John beg his father to let him join because he was older than Daniel. All they ask him was if he had good teeth.
Shortly after the war he stayed but a short time in Maryland before he wanted to go to Cleveland, Ohio. So he and his brothers Daniel and Joseph left Maryland. They changed their name to Flora. They only stayed a short time in Cleveland before they moved to Greenwich, Huron, OH. John and Joseph moved on to Plymouth, Richland, OH. Joseph meant and married Ella Sarah Brown. She had family out west in Kansas an there was land to homestead. So the three brothers came to Kansas. Daniel & Joseph homesteaded each 80 acre, John had 160. They lived in sod houses. When it rained mud would drop down on them.
He joined the Co. H, 6th Maryland in 1862, some of the battles the 6th was in, Mine Run, Winchester 1863-64, Wilderness 5 May 1864, Spotsylvania, Po River, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, Sailors Creek was their last battle.
