Clifford William “Cliff” Peterson of Plentywood passed away early Sunday morning July, 4th 2004, (patriotic to the end!) twelve hours after a fall that caused a broken hip. He was 98. The public joined Cliff’s family in a time of prayer, reflection and remembrance at 7:00 PM Thursday July, 8 at Fulkerson’s in Plentywood. Pastor Larry Pierson officiated at funeral services 2:00 PM Friday July 9 at the First Congregational UCC Church. Casketbearers were Jule Jacobson, Dale McCoy, Jim Nelson, and Bob, Casey, Chad, and Rich Peterson; Honorary Bearers were Ken Collins, Tom Darland, Harold DeSilva, Bill Johnston, Loren O'Toole, Dr. Kirk Stoner, and Shorty Timmerman. Ushers were Arnold Lee, Bennie Lund, and Bub States. Burial, with the Masonic Apron lecture at graveside, was in the Plentywood Memorial Cemetery.

Cliff was born in Souris, ND on April 7, 1906, to Henry and Jennie (Norgren) Peterson. Cliff attended grade school there until 1916, when due to his father's ill health, the family moved to Minnesota to live with Henry’s parents on a farm in Ottertail county. While there, Cliff and his sisters attended a country school until his father passed away that October. His mother then moved the family to Vergas, Minnesota where Cliff finished grade school. He attended high school at Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, graduating in 1923. During these school years Cliff worked in a grocery store owned by two of his uncles, Cal and Alfred Peterson, delivering groceries by motor boat to the homes around the lake.

In the fall of 1926 he came though Plentywood on his way to Scobey, MT to work for his uncle Ernest Peterson at the Peterson-Battleson Co., a general store. Also working there was the lovely young woman Myrtle Hanson, who became Cliff’s wife on October 31, 1930. They continued working in Scobey until February of 1936 when they moved to Plentywood, MT after purchasing a small General store from Mollie Johnson. They converted it into an exclusive woman’s apparel shop which was managed by Myrtle and known as “Peterson’s Ready to Wear”. Cliff then worked for another uncle, Len Peterson at Peterson Hardware. He later became partners with Maurice Plaisance selling cars and machinery for a few years.

In 1952 Cliff and Myrtle built a new building on Main Street for Peterson’s Ready to Wear, which included a ladies shoe department that Cliff managed for several years. It became a family business when their son Bill and wife Eunice bought in and operated the store until closing it in 1997.

Cliff, a lifelong pillar of his community, was very active in civic and fraternal organizations. In 1943, during the war, he served his country by working a year in a civilian defense position at a military parts warehouse for North West Airline in Billings. He also was a member of the Plentywood Ration Board during WWII.

In 1944 he and fellow businessmen Cal Peterson, K.D. Collins and Roland Wilson formed the “Plentywood Development Company”. They purchased and resold property, thus developing the Sunnyside Addition of west Plentywood. In 1947 they donated a block of land to the Sheridan Memorial Hospital on which to build a new building.

Cliff was mayor of Plentywood 1953-54 and also served as a city councilman for many years. He was a Director on the Board of Security State Bank for 14 years and Director/Treasurer of the Pioneer Manor Board for 40 years. He was past president of several organizations which included Lions Club, Shrine Club, Golf Club, Athletic and Booster Club, and the Sportsmen Club. He was a member and past moderator of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, member and past master of the Masonic Lodge, and member of the Scottish Rite. He was parade Marshall for the 40th Annual Fair Parade.

From the Jaycees, he received the “Boss of the Year Award” in 1974, and also their “Distinguished Service Award” in 1976. The Plentywood Lions Club presented him their “Certificate of Appreciation” in 1972 and honored him again in June of 2003 by presenting him with the “Melvin Jones Fellowship Award” for his lifetime of community service. Cliff and Dr. Gaylen Stoner share the honor of being the only two local recipients of this award.

His lifetime passion for golfing, hunting and fishing provided him many enjoyable times spanning five generations of Petersons. As a dedicated family man, Cliff was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and especially his great-great-grandchildren.

Cliff had a happy and positive attitude towards life, always finding the silver lining of any situation. He was always thoughtful of others, lifting their spirits with his sense of humor, a sincere compliment or a quick witted joke. He was a true gentleman, a genuine nice guy and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Myrtle of 62 years and sister Fern Buscher. Cliff is survived by one son, Bill (Eunice) Peterson of Plentywood, one daughter Karrol Kay (Bruce) Gardiner of Kirkland, WA, four grandsons; Casey (Michelle) Peterson and children Karli and Chase of Plentywood; Chad Peterson of Plentywood; Todd Gardiner of Kirkland, WA and Kevin (Mandy) Gardiner and their daughters Kayla, Megan and Kiele of Colorado Springs, CO; two sisters Doris Albright of Crookston, Minnesota, and Henrietta Nelson of Livingston, Mt; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church, the Sheridan Health Care Foundation, the Montana Pioneer Manor, or to the charity of the sender’s choice.
