Gordon Richard "Dick" Dunbar, 91, born on March 17, 1923, son of the late Gordon and Elsie Dunbar went to be with The Lord unexpectedly at home, Thursday, March 5, 2015. He attended Lehman and was a 1941 Timken graduate. He served in the Marine Air Corps during World War II and received the air medal, as well as gold stars for heroic duty. Because of his time in the service, he was able to attend the Pacific HBO Honor Flight in Washington, DC. He earned his BS degree from Bowling Green State University and ME degree from Kent State University. He taught at McKinley, Frankfurt American High School in Germany, Lincoln and Lehman in Canton, was an Assistant Principal at Taft Junior High, as well as a Principal for nine years at Middlebranch and retired as Assistant Principal at GlenOak in Plain Local. Dick was a 64 year member of First Baptist Church, where he was a past deacon, Sunday School superintendent, treasurer, and a member of the Christian Homebuilder's class. He belonged to Trinity Lodge, F&AM 710, Scottish Rite, North Canton Elks, American Legion, Marine VMB 612, Stark County Retired Teachers, Ohio Retired Teachers, Timken Alumni Association, Lehman Alumni Association, and Cleveland "N" Club. He was active in boating safety and education, being a past commander of Stark County Power Squadron, past District 7 commander, and Rear Commander serving National as Budget Officer and Assistant Treasurer. Besides boating, his hobbies were traveling, golf, and playing cards with his wife, Wilma. His favorite charities were First Baptist Church, Power Squadron, and the Plain Local School Foundation. Survived by his wife of 67 years, Wilma (Bell) Dunbar; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Joe Linder of Canton, Carol and Steve Christofer of Dallas, TX; son, Richard M. Dunbar of the home; grandchildren, Jennifer (Andy) Kuba, Julie, Jeremy (Sara), and Janelle Linder (fiance Kyle), Brenon, Thad (Sarah), Hannah, Sarah, Caleb (Esmeralda), and Seth Christofer; great-grandchildren, Megan, Kaitlyn and Evan Kuba, Tessa, Kinsey and Avery Linder. Preceded in death by sisters, Eleanor Geis and Marjorie Morgan. Calling hours will be Monday, March 9 from 5-7pm at Reed Funeral Home North Canton Chapel and Tuesday, March 10 from 10-11am at First Baptist Church with the funeral service beginning at 11am with Rev. Kevin Thomas officiating. Dick's grandsons will be pallbearers. His final resting place will be at North Lawn Cemetery.
