Alice Van Alstine, a 28-year-old former Minutemen sympathizer who made attempts to leave the paramilitary organization was abducted from her Des Moines apartment March 26, 1976, never to be seen alive again.

Officials believe she was killed the night of the abduction, but her remains have never been recovered.

Alice Mae (Barnes) Van Alstine was born May 23, 1947, and graduated from Albia High School in 1965 at the top of her class. Former principal Rolle Foster called her "a very active student."

Alice loved all kinds of animals, and enrolled at Iowa State University after high school with plans to become a veterinarian. She dropped out after running out of money for tuition, but talked about illustrating a veterinarian textbook. She continued to dabble in art and poetry at the Indianola writer's workshop.

She married Lee Harlow Andre in a Des Moines Mormon church on July 15, 1967, and they later reaffirmed their vows in Utah. The had four children: April, Lance, Crystal, and Erich. The couple divorced Jan. 3, 1975.

Alice married Merlyn Everett Van Alstine on Jan. 3, 1975, and they divorced Jan. 1, 1976.
