SMITH, Raymond J., age 22, killed in action, Aug. 31. Son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Smith; brother of Ruth, Carl, William and Mary Ann. Services at Assumption Grotto Church, 9 a. m. Tuesday.
He was aboard the American Turbine Tanker "The Jacksonville", It was part of a convoy of 5 ships but had split off the port side of the convoy to proceed to Loch Ewe, when it was hit by 2 torpedos on August 30, 1944 about 50 miles north of Londonderry, Ireland. The second torpedo split the ship in half. Their cargo was 141.000 barrels of 80 octane gasoline. The torpedo hit, ignited the cargo and flames were said to have shot up 300 feet in the air in just a few seconds. There were 78 aboard, 8 officers, 41 crewman, and 29 armed guards. There were only 2 survivors (1 armed guard and 1 fireman) that were found floating in the water for more than 90 minutes when picked up by the USS Poole.
