Born on September 10, 1951 at Keyser, WV, he was a son of the late Austin Huffman Gardner, Sr. and Anna Jane (Rotruck) Gardner. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Austin H. Gardner, Jr. on December 27, 2014.

Mr. Gardner was a 1970 graduate of Keyser High School. He was formerly employed as a tire mechanic with Duncan Brothers in Winchester, VA and also as house manager for the Mercer County Fellowship Home in Bluefield, WV. He was Methodist by faith. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the National Fisherman's Club and was a dedicated fan of both Keyser High School and WVU Mountaineer basketball and football programs.
