Russell Hyrum Madsen, 82, passed away Nov. 7, 1996 at his home in Sandy, Utah.
Russell was born March 29, 1914, on the Madsen family farm two miles west of Mt. Pleasant, Utah, to Christian Theodore and Sarah Dorothy Swenson Madsen. He graduated from Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant and attended Snow College in Ephraim. He married Ruth Sanderson on December 22, 1936, in the Manti LDS Temple. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1937, with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Russell started his civil engineering career during the depression at Moon Lake Dam living with his wife in a log cabin. Professional job assignments included Deer Creek Dam, the Salt Lake Aqueducts, and Geneva Steel Plant near Provo for Utah-Pomeroy-Morrison. This began Russell's 27 year career with Morrison-Knudsen Co., which included the Anderson Ranch Dam and Cascade Dam, Idaho; Grand Coulee Dam, Washington; and the Kemano-Kitimat project in northern British Columbia-a MK project for the Aluminum Company of Canada. The family moved to the Seattle-Bellevue, Washington area where Russell worked as assistant district manager for MK which involved the supervision of projects in the western United States, New York, the east coast of Canada, Hawaii, and Japan.
Russell and his family later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he was employed by Bechtel Co. and The Atomic Energy Commission. Russell worked in real estate before retiring in 1976, and returning with his family to Sandy, Utah.
Russell cherished his family and always put his family first. "A man firm in his own convictions," he always set an outstanding example for his family, friends, and co-workers. Russell loved the Lord and held many positions in the LDS Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, Sandy, Utah; daughter, Margaret (Brent) Hall, Kent, Washington; son, Rees (Sandra), Westlake, Ohio; daughter, Kathryn (Roderick) Edelman, Alpharetta, Georgia; son, John (Catherine), Sandy, Utah; 19 grandchildren and their spouses; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Shirley (Denice) Madsen, Mt. Pleasant, Utah; one sister, Elna Madsen Nielson, Ft. Green, Utah. Russell was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Theodore, Royal, Chesley, and Richard Madsen.
Our family wishes to express our sincere thanks for the loving care given by Creekside/Columbia Health Care personnel.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 9, 1996, at 11 a.m. in the Sandy Utah LDS Stake Center, 9331 South 300 East, Sandy, Utah. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment, Mt. Pleasant, Utah City Cemetery, at approximately 3 p.m.
