Shirley was born on June 4, 1920 in Mt. Pleasant to Christian T. and Sarah Swensen Madsen. He married Denice Blackham on May 25, 1942 in Yakima, Wash.
Graduated from Wasatch Academy in May of 1937. Attended U.S.U. The National Guard unit from Mt. Pleasant, of which he was a member, was called into service during World War II. Attended O.C.S. training. He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division as 2nd Lieutenant. He earned the Bronze Star, four Campaign Ribbons, and three Beach-head landing awards. Was discharged in November 1945 with the rank of Captain. He had served as commander and adjutant of the local American Legion Unit. Also was on the original committee that founded Memorial Drive flag display at Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery, which honors his fellow veterans.
His wife survives along with one daughter, Sheryl (Jack) Laub, Salt Lake City, Ut.; five sons, Chris (Cheryle), Layton; Jim (Mary Ann), Carlin, NV; Dave (Cheryl), Mt. Pleasant; Tom (Tarea), Preston, ID; Paul (Renee), Mt. Pleasant; sister, Elna Nielson, Ft. Green;
