Lydia Belle VanCleave, a former resident of Dallas County and Adel, passed away on Tuesday March 11, 1951 at Oxnard, CA, at the age of 88.
'Aunt Belle' as she was known in the community, was a good friend and neighbor. She was a member of the Methodist Churh in Adel.
Funeral services were held in Adel, on Monday. Rev. Clarence Thiele spoke the last rites. Interment was at the Panther Creek Cemetery. Paullbearers were John Walker, Merle Chance, Ollie Flinn, Otto Couch and John Fidler.
Rev. Theil read the following facts concerning the life of Mrs. VanCleave:
On July 16, 1863, a daughter, Lydia Belle, was born to John V. and Elizabeth Thorn King, on a farm southwest of Adel, Iowa.
She grew to womanhood in this community and for a time taught school after attending Normal School at Dexter, Iowa.
On October 17th, 1883 she was married to A.B. VanCleave, who went to his heavenly home on February 15th, 1924.
Five children were welcomed into their home, Stella M. Hilbert, who departed this life in CA in 1912, Ida E. Fordyce of Camarillo, CA,. Blanche dying in infancy; Darwin A. VanCleave, of Missouri Valley, IA and Edith B. Beals, of Osceola, IA. Besides these she leaves 6 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, two sisters, Marilla Hougham of CA and Phoebe Ellis of Dallas County, IA and a number of neices and nephews.
Three sisters and 2 brothers preceded her in death.
For a time after her marriage she lived in Dallas County, then living in Kansas for eight years. Upon the return from Kansas, she lived on a farm west of Adel until 1915, when the family moved to Adel. After the death of her husband she maintained her home in Adel until 1944, when she went to CA to be with her daughter, Ida.
Her last days were spent in a rest home in Oxnard, CA, wher she had been bedfast since October 1950.
