Florence Elizabeth Thody Brighton died peacefully in Vancouver, Washington on Sunday, March 1, 2015 with her daughter, Nancy, at her side.

Florence is survived by her three children, Nancy Glee Preece (Eldred Bruce) of Vancouver, Patricia Kathleen Rust (Richard Dilworth) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and Thomas Bow Brighton III (Linda Elizabeth Paaso) of Woodland Hills. She is also survived by two sisters, Mabel and Kathleen Thody. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Kenneth William Brighton; her brother, William Alan Thody; her sister, Gertrude Peterson; and her grandson, David Brighton Preece; as well as her parents.

Florence was born August 26, 1911 in Salt Lake City to Louis Albert Thody and Sarah Cutler.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Utah in 1933.

She married Kenneth William Brighton in Chicago, Illinois on June 8, 1935 and was later sealed to him in the Salt Lake Temple.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Florence served as Relief Society President and Stake Young Women's President as well as in numerous other callings.

She loved music and was a member of a string trio with Elder David B. Haight and Sister Adeline Ensign in the West Suburban Branch of the LDS Church.

While residing in Maywood, Illinois, she was elected president of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women. She served as both a substitute teacher and a full-time teacher in Broadview, Illinois.

She was an accomplished seamstress and managed Finn's Fabrics in Barrington, Illinois. Many family members treasure gifts of her handiwork, from knit Christmas stockings to needlepoint hangings to crewel embroidery to wedding dresses.

She had a passion for travel and was privileged to visit Hawaii, Europe, and South America. Florence invited many people to their home who enjoyed delicious meals at her table, and she is especially remembered for her excellent dinner rolls.

She is loved by her family and will be greatly missed by her children, thirteen grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015 in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, where she will be interred next to her husband.
