Kitchener was actually known as Berlin (1854-1916) when Medon was born. Immigrants from Germany, mostly Lutheran and Catholic, dominated Berlin, but due to the anti-German sentiment caused by the Great War it's name was changed in 1916. After much debate and controversy, the name of the city was changed to Kitchener for the late British Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener who died that same year.
