The man who led the Catholic team that initially worked on the Dead Sea Scrolls, Father Roland de Vaux served as director of the Ecole Biblique between 1945 and 1965. Between 1951 and 1956, his team excavated the ancient site of Khirbet Qumran between 1951 and 1956, as well as several caves near Qumran northwest of the Dead Sea. From 1938 to 1953 he was the editor of 'Revue Biblique'.
