Shelly “Jack” Scott, 94, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at his home in McDade, Texas.

Jack was born in McDade, Texas on Monday, November 22, 1920 to Walter H. and Gertrude Fleming Scott.

He served in the United States Army where he was stationed in Colorado. His assigned duty was an ambulance driver. Jack met the love of his life, Rose Lawhon in Elgin, Texas while fixing a flat at a garage in Elgin around November 1945. Jack was close friends with Rose’s brother Wilton Lawhon and one day Wilton brought Rose with him into Elgin. They stopped at the garage to talk to Jack. He took one look at Rose, hit his foot with a hammer and fell in love. They dated for 7 months before he proposed to her sitting in his car across from what is now the Dollar General in Elgin.

Jack and Rose were married on June 12, 1946 at the courthouse in Georgetown, Texas. After their marriage they resided in McDade and he worked as a mechanic for Camp Swift. Then moved to Houston in 1952 where Jack started a career as a truck driver. He worked for various trucking companies. He retired from Western Auto after 30 years of service. During his 30 years he received countless safe driver awards. Jack provided for his family doing what he knew best, driving.

In May 1998 Jack and Rose returned to Elgin to reside and later in November 2001 returned to the Scott home place in McDade. Jack was very proud of his McDade roots; he loved the McDade community dearly. Jack was a devoted member of the McDade Church of Christ. He was a kind and sweet man that rarely knew a stranger. He lived his life devoted to his family. There was not anything he wouldn’t do for them that was in his ability. He saw many health issues throughout his later life, but credited the love of his family for living 94 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Gertrude Scott; two brothers, Jeff and John Scott; one sister, Minnie Paidle; and one grandson, Matthew Stolte.

Jack leaves to cherish his memories his beautiful wife of 68 years, Rose Lawhon Scott; three children, Bob Scott and companion Sheryl Liskow, Melvin Scott and wife Phyllis and Donna and husband Kirk Stolte; six grandchildren, Jennifer Scott, Jason Scott and wife Melissa, Joel Scott and wife Natalie, Jill and husband Shawn Driskill, Keith Kubosh and wife Cambri and Nick Stolte; five great grandchildren, Ashley, Alemon, Hunter Milburn, Lauren Scott, Delaney Driskill, Caylee Driskill. Jack is also survived by a special niece, Linda Haverland and nephew Tony Paidle and many more family and friends.

The family gives a special thank you to Dr. Michael Gutierrez for believing a man of Jack’s age could still live a productive life and provided him the best medical care possible.

The family will receive guests at the Elgin Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at the Elgin Funeral Home, with Reverend Ronnie Gregory and Oscar Graves officiating. Interment to follow at McDade Cemetery.
