MEMPHIS – Roy Durell Gillespie, 78, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto in Southaven. He was born Jan. 23, 1924, in Vardaman to the late James Oscar Gillespie and Minnie Lee Foshee Gillespie. He was a graduate of Vardaman High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a baker for the Tastee Bakery for more than 40 years. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Vardaman with the Rev. Dale Easley officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Springs Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine McGreger Gillespie of Memphis; two daughters, Myra Akins of Southaven, and Judy Shaw and her husband, John, of Memphis; two sons, Kenneth Gillespie of Horn Lake and Steve Gillespie of Arlington, Tenn.; a sister, Maylene G. McQuirter of Memphis; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Rodney Gillespie, Clay Gregory, Bubba Freely, Eric Clayton, Pat Bishop and Sterlin Murphree.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today
