Peter P. "Pete" Leventis, III was the son of Peter P. Leventis, Jr. and his wife Tina Palassis Leventis. He was born Oct. 16, 1943 and died June 27, 1971. He was 27 years of age at the time of his death. He predeceased his parents. He was a 1965 graduate of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. While a cadet at that school he was a member of Echo Company of the Second Battalion and the Regimental Staff. He was a Political Science major and attended The Citadel while living in Columbia, S.C. He was a Marine contract cadet. He held cadet rank of Corporal his sophomore year, Staff Sergeant his junior year, and Captain his senior year. He consistently was named to the Dean's List and wore Gold Stars (academic excellence). He was named a Superior Military Cadet his sophomore year and was a member of the Standing Hop Committee, the Beach House Committee, the Tea Dance Committee, the Semper Fidelis Society, The Round Table, Pi Sigma Alpha, the International Relations Club, and was a member and Governor of the Student Legislature. He was the Class of 1965 Secretary and was a member of The Citadel's elite Junior Sword Drill, one of the highest honors attainable by a member of the junior class at The Citadel. He was a member of "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities." He was granted a Bachelor's degree in Political Science May 29, 1965 and it is thought that he was also commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Marine Corps on that date. The Leventis Scholarship was established at The Citadel in memory of Peter P. Leventis III's grandfather, Peter P. Leventis, Sr. by Peter P. Leventis, Jr., Citadel class of 1941. For a number of years there was a Leventis Scholarship at The Citadel that was established primarily for the purpose of attracting to The Citadel outstanding young men. The scholarship was not restricted by either financial need or geographical limitations. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Surviving are his brothers Phil P. Leventis of Sumter and Nick P. Leventis of Columbia. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund or to The Citadel, The Citadel Development Foundation, the President's Honorary Scholarship Fund. Charleston. S.C. 29409. He is interred at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, S.C., North Lake Garden, Lot 148, Space 3.
