Vernon L. "Spike" Phelps Sr., 77, of New Castle, passed away Monday evening, Mar. 2,2015 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born June 20,1937 in New Castle and was the son of the late Ernest and Louise (Griffin) Phelps Sr. Spike retired from Borg-Warner Gear in Muncie after 20 years of service. Previously, he had worked at New Castle Chrysler Corp for 10 years. New Castle Firestone Plant for 15 years and Diamond Container Box Factory. He was a lifelong very renowned Carpenter in New Castle area. He was a lifelong member of Wiley United Methodist Church and actually helped build the new building when the church moved. "He was a well-known "Pinterest" before people even knew what "Pinterest" was Vernon Jr., remembers one year when dad was out of work they awoke on Christmas morning and found "DAD" had built all of their Christmas presents that were awesome.

Vernon is survived by four daughters, Valesa "Cissy" Watts and companion Garland Moore of Indianapolis, Angel Gray of New Castle, Karen Jean Goins of New Castle and Julie (husband Rickie) Clark of Brownsburg, IN; four sons, Vernon (wife Carol) Phelps Jr. of Bowling Green, KY, John Phelps of Indianapolis; twin sons, Kyle (wife Maria) Phelps and Kelly (wife Andrea) Phelps both of Dayton, O.; twenty-one grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one brother, David (wife Priscilla) Phelps of Knightstown, IN. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive and a host of brothers and sisters-in-laws. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Phelps, July 29,2009; one sister, Della Mae Warren; four brothers, Charles, Ernest, John and Stephen "Petie" Phelps. His very special dog "Tootsie."

Funeral services will be held 12 noon Sat., Mar. 7,20`15 at the New Wiley U.M.C. located at corner of 21st Street and Shopp Ave., with Rev. Tom McGillard officiating. Burial will follow at the South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition. Friends may call Sat. from 10-11:50 a.m. at the church. Hacker-Main & Davis Funeral Homes are in charge of the arrangements.
