Howard L. Farmer, age 93, Colonel U.S.A.F. Retired, passed away after a long illness, on March 1, 2016. Mr. Farmer, was a long time resident of Florida. He had been in an assisted living home in California when he died.

Mr. Farmer was a native of Albany, Ga. He was born on March. 3, 1923. He was the eldest of three children born to the late H.L. Farmer and Clarice M. Farmer. He is also preceded in death by his children, Gloria Carol Farmer and Robin Eve Jones; brother, James Lloyd Farmer and a sister, Gladys Ann Farmer..

In 1940, Mr. Farmer married Gloria Ann Strickland in Albany, Ga. They would have a long and happy marriage of 65 years. He often praised his wife as a perfect military wife. Together they raised five children.

Mr. Farmer joined the service in WWII, completing his pilots training in 1943. At he end of the war he left the service and stayed in the reserves. He was recalled to active service in 1950 for the Korean War. He continued his career with time to earn two degrees. He had a mechanical engineering degree from Oklahoma A&M and a masters degree from Southern Methodist in the missile program. He served in Southeast Asia in during1968. He was stationed at NKP in Thailand.

Mr. Farmer loved to fly. In the early 50's he was a test pilot at Brookley, AFB. He flew all of the early jets and in his off years he delivered newspapers via air to rural areas. He learned to fly crop dusting planes in his native Georgia. That type of flying placed Mr. Farmer in a “mosquito” squadron which utilized low level hedge hopping techniques.

By nature, Mr. Farmer was quiet and reserved. He was thoughtful and loving. He leaves behind his daughters, Cherie Farmer Cashman and Charlotte Marie Farmer of Temecula, CA and son, David P. Farmer of Renton, WA; nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. He was happily called, “Oldpa.” by all the family. He will be incredibly missed.

A visitation will be held Thursday, March 17, 2016 between 5:00PM and 7:00pm at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 161 Racetrack Rd, in Ft. Walton Beach. A graveside service will be held with full military honors on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 10:00am at Beal Memorial Cemetery.
