Leslie W. Black, 55, of Harrisburg died peacefully on Sunday, March 1, 2015, at home surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of 32 years to Janice (Nevel) Black.
Les was born in Bloomsburg on May 2, 1959, a son to the late Franklin and Ruth (Kitchen) Black. He was a retired Chief Master Sergeant and Superintendent of the 193rd Special Operations Wing, Communications Squadron, of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard in Middletown, Pa.
He graduated from Bloomsburg High School’s Class of 1977. Les enlisted in the Air National Guard in February 1979. He received dozens of awards and decorations in recognition of his exemplary service and was honorably discharged upon his retirement in 2014.
Les was an avid Penn State football and Pittsburgh sports fan, but also rooted for the Philadelphia Eagles when they weren’t playing the Steelers. He enjoyed classic cars, having campfires in his backyard with friends and family, and his loyal dog, Spud. Les was an active member of his American Legion, Post 272, and served as the 2nd Vice Commander of the Post. Most of all, Les was dedicated to his family. He was an involved and loving father, always there for his children’s activities, including coaching their sports teams and volunteering with Boy Scouts. His love for his family and his legacy as an admired leader will live well beyond his time on Earth.
